Therapeutic Asian Massage Treatments

Three therapeutic Asian massage treatments: Abhyanga oriental massage – ayurvedic techniques with oil / Anma Japanese massage – oil-free / aromatherapy massage with healing fragrances. Watch massage videos online / shop for aromatherapy oils and DVDs.

I. Abhyanga Massage or Kerala Ayurvedic Treatment –Asian Massage with Oil

Traditional full-body Abhyanga oriental massage is unique amongst the Asian therapies because it involves two therapists who smother their client’s body with warm oil and allow it to soak in, after which the oil is rubbed with long, deep strokes, using the palms of the hands. This treatment does not penetrate deeply, so is suitable as a daily aromatherapy massage, best done in the morning.

Abhyanga / Kerala therapeutic Asian massage can include Panchakarma healing therapies such as Nasyam to alleviate sinusitis, allergies, nasal congestion, infections, headaches, and migraines. The procedure involves essential ayurvedic oils in two steps. First a small amount of oil is placed in the nostrils, then the head, face, shoulders and chest receive a vigorous aromatherapy massage, also with essential oils, until the sinuses, nasal cavities and upper lymphatic glands drain. This treatment offers temporary relief of nasal congestion and headache. Be wary of combining Nasyam with other Panchakarma treatments such as Vaman, which induces vomiting, Virechan, which involves purgatives, Vasti, an oil enema, and Rakta Moksham, a form of blood-letting.

II. Anma Japanese Massage – Dry Oriental Massage – Shiatsu Precursor

Anma Japanese massage (Nihon Kaifuku Anma) is about pressing and deep tissue kneading. It’s one of the oldest massage forms in the world used in China, Korea and Japan – the father of Shiatsu. It’s versatile for therapeutic purposes because it doesn’t involve oil or removing clothes and can be done in many positions.

Techniques are based on stimulating points with strong pressure, then releasing and kneading to relieve muscular tension and promote circulation. The action of firmly pressing then releasing has a positive effect on tense muscles, back pain and headaches. While a Japanese massage therapist performs deep tissue Anma kneading, the client will take deep breaths – to alleviate congestion and encourages blood flow. Although there are nine techniques in this oriental massage (to stimulate the whole body), usually two or three are used in each therapeutic session.

III. Aromatherapy Massage – Ayurvedic Oil for a Relaxing Asian Massage

Aromatherapy massage treatments may include lymphatic drainage, acupressure, reflexology and oriental massage techniques, but it’s not primarily for effleurages, kneading, chopping or cupping, but for healing. Western aromatherapy massage centers focus on relaxation, but true Asian massage with aromatherapy is about the oils carefully chosen for their curative properties. For example:

  1. Lavender, juniper, rosemary / thyme – rheumatic pain.
  2. Marjoram, black pepper, basil / peppermint – muscular pain.
  3. Bergamot, clary sage, neroli oil / bitter orange – depression.
  4. Sandalwood, camphor / peppermint – gastrointestinal disorders.
  5. Grapefruit, lemon / orange – energy.
  6. Ylang-ylang, geranium / lavender – relaxation.
  7. Frankincense, ginger, lemongrass, pine / rose oil – revitalization.

Aromatherapy massage for healing is unscientific and should not be used to treat serious diseases, however, the fragrant oils do refresh, invigorate and relax the body.
