I’m always on the look out for new holiday ideas that are a little bit different from the regular package deals available on the high street. Whether its a skiing holiday Japan or a trip on the Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Vladivostock, I like to take trips that get my imagination going.

This year I’ve decided to do something that I have never even contemplated before and that’s a fishing holiday. Don’t ask me where I got the idea to do this as I really have no idea, I haven’t fished since I was a boy and I’ve never had the inclination to revisit this popular pastime.

I think what swung it for my was seeing adverts for Alaska fishing lodges, for some reason starting to read all about them gave me a strong urge to learn more and quickly make a booking. The promotional material for these Alaska fishing holidays talks about how they are the angler’s dream come true with the best fishing anywhere on the planet. But this isn’t what won be over, it was the photographs of the pristine wildness that really caught my eye. When you live in the city for most of the year I think its only natural to want to escape to somewhere with clean, fresh air and a low density of human beings.

The thing is, it is all very well going on a trip to see the most beautiful places on Earth, but having a reason for taking the trip other than just sightseeing can really add an extra zing to your holiday. I think that learning a little about fishing and recapturing some of the excitement I got this hobby all those years ago will make my Alaskan holiday one to remember.

All that’s left of me to do now is my homework to ensure my first ever fishing holiday is as productive and memorable as possible. Who knows, this might be the start of something special.
