Understanding the best way to lose weight is not just about looking great, having more energy and fitting into your skinny jeans, but about eliminating internal fat to lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. While fat cells can’t be eliminated, they can be shrunk. The question is: how? Here are the answers you’ve been looking for on how to effectively loose weight, not based on myths, personal speculation or popular marketing scams, but on scientific studies.

Are You Immune to a Fat Burning Diet?

Many individuals blame their weight gain on a “fat gene” or a “slow metabolism”. Science has studied whether obesity is primarily genetic and if some people are immune to a low-calorie fat burning diet due to a naturally low metabolic rate. What did they discover?

Throughout this post, follow the scientific exploration of How To Be Slim presented by the BBC in a six-part series:

BBC – How to be Slim Part 1/6

Do Slim People Have a Higher Metabolic Rate?

Metabolism is about how much energy (calories) the body requires when at rest, and the facts indicate that heavier people have a higher metabolic rate, not the other way around. Abnormal metabolisms are rare and seldom the cause of obesity. A normal metabolism will MAINTAIN body weight whatever that may be.

BBC – How to be Slim Part 2/6

Is a Fat Gene to Blame for Obesity?

The famous “fat gene”, only found in a minute percentage of the population, isn’t triggered without excessive caloric intake. Fat isn’t generated by breathing air, therefore, a fat burning diet, which reduces calories below what the body needs to maintain its current weight, will be effective.

BBC – How to be Slim Part 3/6

How Much Are You Really Eating?

Why do certain individuals gain weight while claiming to adhere to a low-calorie diet? The answer is that some people eat a lot more than they think they’re eating. For science to prove that the best way to lose weight is indeed a low calorie diet, a test was developed to measure how much people REALLY eat. Using DLW (doubly labeled water), with non-radioactive isotope markers, caloric intake is measured accurately. The results indicate that people with weight issues, who believe they eat very little, unconsciously may consume as much as double what they claim to eat.

BBC – How to be Slim Part 4/6

Protein-Rich Meals – Long-lasting Satiety and Weight Loss

With genetic and metabolic excuses eliminated, and overeating again responsible for weight gain, the question remains:

Why do some people eat more than others?

There are two main reasons.

a propensity to eat even when not hungry (poor eating habits established in childhood)

eating foods that don’t satisfy. When hunger returns quickly, a person is likely to eat sooner, therefore consume more calories.

Scientific studies suggest that the best way to lose weight is to obtain satisfaction from meals for longer periods of time. How?

BBC – How to be Slim Part 5/6

1. Protein

Eating protein keeps the stomach full longer. Reducing carbohydrates and increasing protein is the key to a fat burning diet. Tofu, salmon, tuna, trout and mackerel, plus leafy greens, provides the body what it needs to lose weight and be satisfied.

2. Thick Soup

Scientific experiments prove that drinking meals may be best way to lose weight. A thick blended soup will satisfy longer than the same foods in a regular meal + a glass of water.

3. Portion Size

Studies indicate that people tend to gobble whatever’s served on their plate/bowl. By choosing a smaller dish, people can feel satisfied with 30% – 50% less.

4. Meals As Events

People consume more when focused on watching a movie / TV. Whether eating meals or imbibing nutrients while on a juice diet, mealtime should be a separate event in order for the brain to record optimum satisfaction.

5. No Buffets

Experiments suggest that too many choices (even healthy ones) will cause people to unconsciously overindulge little by little. Avoid buffets like the plague.

BBC – How to be Slim Part 6/6

A Vegetable Juice Diet?

While protein prolongs satiety, getting sufficient veggies, especially greens, is essential, yet difficult. A vegetable juice diet may be a means to obtain the three to five recommended fruits and vegetables a day and in delicious combinations that just glide down. Jason Vale is one of the UK’s top juice diet experts. Take a look at a snippet of Jason Vale’s juice diet recipes in this video:

- The Juice Master: Turbo-Charge Your Life in 14 Days by Jason Vale

Another way to get greens and fruits is with green smoothies like those recommended by Victoria Boutenko.

The difference between a juice diet and green smoothies?

The differences between a juice diet and drinking smoothies is about carbohydrates and fiber. Vegetable/fruit juices are EXTRACTED, green smoothies are BLENDED using whole fruits / leafs to create a thick drink with parsley, kale, dandelion, spinach (or other greens) plus apples, blue-purple/red berries and seasonal fruit –the fibrous pulp is included. A juice diet focuses on nutrients in a variety of starch and non-starchy vegetables; green smoothies are just leafy greens and fruits – no starch.

Green Smoothies Recipes

The best green smoothies recipes are those made from 40% – 50% fresh leafy greens and 50% – 60% seasonal fruit, plus water. Nothing else! Exotic super fruits are not essential for nutritious smoothies. Adapt original green smoothies recipes using basic principles found in the book “Green Smoothie Revolution: The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health” by Victoria Boutenko.

Order the Book now.

- Green Smoothie Revolution: The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health by Victoria Boutenko

For simple, basic tips on GREEN smoothies, have a look at what Victoria Boutenko’s son, Sergei Boutenko, has to say in this video presentation:

Green Smoothie (Original)

Digestion and Combing Fruits and Veggies

Green smoothies recipes don’t include carbohydrate-type vegetables like carrots, beats, broccoli, cabbage (and others), only green leaves and fruit. The distinction is important when it comes to digestive enzymes. The basic rules for green smoothies are:

Use only greens (not starchy veggies), fruit and water

keep smoothies simple = two/ three ingredients

rotate greens daily for optimum nutrients

reduce fruit and increase greens slowly over time

Buy the DVD Greens Can Save Your Life by Victoria Boutenko (NTSC version for Region 1 – the United States and Canada). Although release in 2005, the information and inspiration provided in as up to date and pertinent TODAY as it ever has been. Greens don’t go out of style! Even if you’re skeptical about Victoria Boutenko’s approach, this DVD will show compelling evidence about the nutritional value of GREENS.

Why does it seem like some people eat and eat and never gain an ounce, while others sniff something yummy in the air and gain a pound?

1. Massage Table Warmer by Master Massage

Medical massage therapy and aromatherapy require temperature control for comfort. A massage table warming pad with adjustable settings does the trick. The Massage Master heat pad measures 72 by 26 inches and is a good budget model (so long as you have an extension cord). This isn’t a cover, so you’ll still need sheets. (Can be used at home without a table.)

2. Massage Oil Warmer by Master Massage

Bring oil to the perfect temperature using the Golden Touch Master Massage warmer with adjustable gauge. Slip an 8-ounce bottle into the holder and select a temperature. This is an affordable warmer but just as good as the expensive ones.

Aromatherapy Oils and Essences for Relaxation Massage Treatments

Relaxation and medical massage therapy requires having lots of carrier oil on hand. It should be easy to warm, non-irritating and affordable in large quantities.

I. Abhyanga Massage or Kerala Ayurvedic Treatment –Asian Massage with Oil

Traditional full-body Abhyanga oriental massage is unique amongst the Asian therapies because it involves two therapists who smother their client’s body with warm oil and allow it to soak in, after which the oil is rubbed with long, deep strokes, using the palms of the hands. This treatment does not penetrate deeply, so is suitable as a daily aromatherapy massage, best done in the morning.

Abhyanga / Kerala therapeutic Asian massage can include Panchakarma healing therapies such as Nasyam to alleviate sinusitis, allergies, nasal congestion, infections, headaches, and migraines. The procedure involves essential ayurvedic oils in two steps. First a small amount of oil is placed in the nostrils, then the head, face, shoulders and chest receive a vigorous aromatherapy massage, also with essential oils, until the sinuses, nasal cavities and upper lymphatic glands drain. This treatment offers temporary relief of nasal congestion and headache. Be wary of combining Nasyam with other Panchakarma treatments such as Vaman, which induces vomiting, Virechan, which involves purgatives, Vasti, an oil enema, and Rakta Moksham, a form of blood-letting.

II. Anma Japanese Massage – Dry Oriental Massage – Shiatsu Precursor

Anma Japanese massage (Nihon Kaifuku Anma) is about pressing and deep tissue kneading. It’s one of the oldest massage forms in the world used in China, Korea and Japan – the father of Shiatsu. It’s versatile for therapeutic purposes because it doesn’t involve oil or removing clothes and can be done in many positions.

Techniques are based on stimulating points with strong pressure, then releasing and kneading to relieve muscular tension and promote circulation. The action of firmly pressing then releasing has a positive effect on tense muscles, back pain and headaches. While a Japanese massage therapist performs deep tissue Anma kneading, the client will take deep breaths – to alleviate congestion and encourages blood flow. Although there are nine techniques in this oriental massage (to stimulate the whole body), usually two or three are used in each therapeutic session.

III. Aromatherapy Massage – Ayurvedic Oil for a Relaxing Asian Massage

Aromatherapy massage treatments may include lymphatic drainage, acupressure, reflexology and oriental massage techniques, but it’s not primarily for effleurages, kneading, chopping or cupping, but for healing. Western aromatherapy massage centers focus on relaxation, but true Asian massage with aromatherapy is about the oils carefully chosen for their curative properties. For example:

Lavender, juniper, rosemary / thyme – rheumatic pain.

Marjoram, black pepper, basil / peppermint – muscular pain.

Bergamot, clary sage, neroli oil / bitter orange – depression.

Sandalwood, camphor / peppermint – gastrointestinal disorders.

Grapefruit, lemon / orange – energy.

Ylang-ylang, geranium / lavender – relaxation.

Frankincense, ginger, lemongrass, pine / rose oil – revitalization.

Aromatherapy massage for healing is unscientific and should not be used to treat serious diseases, however, the fragrant oils do refresh, invigorate and relax the body.

Collagen hydrolysate or hydrolyzed collagen supplements contain amino acid peptides (building material for protein), predominantly hydroxyproline, praline and glycine. It’s hydroxyproline and proline that makes collagen unique and is only found in one other protein substance – elastin. For hydroxylation of praline to occur, and become suitable for the body to use in joints and connective tissue, ascorbic acid must be present. This means that collagen supplements should include vitamin C.

Types of Collagen

The body produces many different types of natural collagen depending on the area (29 types have been documented), including type I collagen that’s used as one of the main components of bones, skin, tendons, ligaments and artery walls, and type II that’s used for cartilage and therefore affects joints. However various types work alongside each other in closely related structures, for example type III usually goes hand-in-hand with type I.

The Uniqueness of Fibrous Protein Structures

Collagen, despite being a protein, acts very differently from other proteins because it’s fibrous – forming extremely tough structures that support tissue, give strength and elasticity to skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, the cornea of the eye and muscles. Collagen creates what may be likened to a spider-web or spun silk – a fiber that has enormous tensile strength and flexibility. It affects all forms of body movement, muscular development, skin texture, bone strength, and may even influence the way the body handles weight related issues.

Commercial Hydrolyzed Collagen Supplements

With collagen being such an essential ingredient in how we function, it’s no wonder collagen hydrolysate and hydrolyzed collagen supplements have been developed from animal substances, primarily bovine (some fish / chicken) sources. However, Reserveage makes vegetarian capsules that are not collagen but a Collagen Booster.

Does Supplementation Replenish Collagen in the Body?

While artificial techniques to create collagen have been successfully used to grow skin grafts in laboratories, the question of oral collagen supplements to help osteoarthritis, joint pain, post-workout muscle recovery, and aging skin is still being tested, and to date, there has not been much success. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why collagen supplements don’t appear to offer consistent positive results.

Clinical Tests

Some clinical evidence suggests that patients with hip, knee and joint pain (often suffering from osteoarthritis) who have been given concentrated pharmaceutical collagen hydrolysate, notice increased levels of hydroxyproline, however not significantly greater than those given placebos. There have been minor positive results when calcitonin and collagen supplements were used in combined therapies. (Calcitonin is a thyroid hormone that regulates how the body metabolizes calcium and phosphorus – lowering blood calcium levels and curbing osteoclast action in bones, regulating vitamin D and even having an affect on appetite and how satiated one feels after eating.) Despite a few isolated positive examples, studies indicate that placebos administered to participants were equally as effective as the collagen supplementation given.

Combining dosages of the amino acid glucosamine, and chondroitin (a primary structural element that the body uses to build cartilage), has been studied in an effort to find an effective treatment for arthritic pain, joint problems and to help restoration of deteriorated articular cartilage. To date, when these supplementary elements have been administered to participants in placebo controlled trials, no evidence has been found to support the hypothesis that oral glucosamine and chondroitin help the body produce collagen to repair or build cartilage, and there are only minor favorable results in using them to ease joint pain.

The Problem with Taking Pre-fabricated Collagen

While collagen supplements theoretically should, and in some individual cases do, help joint pain, muscle recovery and provide a treatment for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, clinical evidence on its effectiveness is not favorable. One of the reasons that oral collagen supplementation doesn’t appear to be as effective in reality (as opposed to how it should work theoretically) is due to the way the body breaks down ingested substances into basic amino acid structures. Taking a substance that’s already “collagen” has little effect because the digestive process simply views it as food and breaks it down into basics elements to be used as needed. This means that eating amino acid – rich foods would have a similar effect. It appears clear that the body can’t utilize readymade collagen and place it immediately into connective tissue, bones, joints, cartilage and skin. Furthermore, the majority of the 22 amino acids (used for protein and collagen) are produced (synthesized) by the body on its own, with 20 of them being indelibly connected to the genetic code, and only 8 (considered to be essential amino acids) e supplied by food / oral sources and absorbed through the digestive process.

Cosmetic Collagen Products – Oral and Topical

Oral collagen supplements for skin, hair, nails and other body parts are subject to the same problem: digestion and re-converting the supplement into amino acids, therefore the same advice can be given: take an amino acid supplement or eat foods that help the body make its own collagen.

Applying collagen topically is a waste of money (and collagen cosmetic products aren’t cheap). The skin can’t absorb collagen in a cream, liquid, gel, or other topical form. The only way to boost skin elasticity is to give your body what it needs to make collagen by eating amino acid-rich foods and/or supplements that boost the body’s overall health. The bad news is that skin elasticity levels and collagen production is on a biological time clock (and also connected with hormone production). There comes a point when the body ceases producing sufficient collagen to keep skin tight, toned and wrinkle-free. Women (and men) who want to remain wrinkle free after middle age may need to try the latest injectable procedures to fill fine lines and wrinkles, consider cosmetic surgery or high-tech facial rejuvenation treatments.

Hope for Oral Enzymatically Processed Collagen – Amino Acids

There are some oral collagen formulation on the market that claim to have been enzymatically processed, in other words, the collagen is delivered in an amino acid form that the body (theoretically) can absorb and utilize. Although clinical studies show inconclusive results, there are many individuals who claim to have benefited from amino acid supplementation. For some individuals, it may be worth testing personally since there are almost no side effects to taking oral collagen supplements. While clinical studies haven’t been able to substantiate results, the individuals who claim most benefit from taking oral amino acids and collagen boosting products are those with osteoarthritis and osteoporosis who suffer with chronic joint pain, and athletes who want better muscle recovery after intense workouts.

In the UK the best whey protein powders, shakes, bars, pre workout supplements and athletic performance enhancing products are made by a company called PhD Nutrition.

PhD supplements include Pharma HMB, Pharma Whey powders, Pharma Gain, V Max Pump, Diet Whey drinks, Diet Whey bars, Smart Bar, Recovery 2:1 formula, Lean Degree, Synergy ISO 7, Waxy Vol, Wired, Battery +/3, Catalyst, BCAA, CLA, Creatine, L-Glutamine, and other specialized bio-engineered complexes to maximize strength, endurance, muscle gain and recovery.

Top Five PhD Supplements

1. Synergy-ISO-7 – The Best Whey Protein and Muscle Mass Building Complex

The top selling PhD supplements include Synergy-ISO-7, an all-in-one sports supplement to maximize strength, deliver lean muscle mass, increase power, help recovery / muscle repair and provide protein. It’s what PhD calls “complete nutritional synergy” without having to calculate protein, creatine, or L-Glutamine in separate products.

Why is this the best whey protein and lean mass building formula? Because each serving contains a balanced blend of whey protein concentrate / isolate, a muscle volumising matrix that includes micronised creatine L-glutamine, taurine, a mineral blend that includes magnesium / Zinc, and a vitamin complex.

2. Pharma Whey HT+ – The Best Whey Protein / Probiotic Digestive Enzyme Blend

The second top selling product in the PhD supplements lines is the Pharma Whey HT+; possibly the best whey protein on the market with Hydro Tech+, a hydrolysed whey protein isolate. It also contains probiotics, a proprietary digestive enzyme blend, BCAA’s and L-Glutamine without additional fat or wheat gluten. It comes in 5 flavors. See just how easy it is to mix into a shake.

3. PhD Workout Window Stack – The Best Pre Workout Supplement + Recovery

The best pre workout supplement, V Max Pump, is included in this stack of four products. Why buy a stack? So as not to forget the window of opportunity BEFORE starting the workout. Most athletes and bodybuilders use a post workout recovery supplement but forget about the period during and before training. Although the best pre workout supplement that PhD Nutrition makes (V-Max Pump) can be bought separately, the pre-selected Workout Window Stack has everything in a kit –V-max Pump, branched chain amino acid capsules (BCAAs), and Recovery 2:1 / Battery.

Why do the PhD Diet Whey products offer the best protein for weight loss? Because they help burn fat based on the latest scientific studies that suggest a body needs protein and not carbohydrates to burn fat deposits. PhD Nutrition Diet Whey powder contains 35 grams of protein per serving while only 7 g of carbs. It also has Flaxseed, L-Carnitine, CLA, and green tea.

Why is a high protein low carb drink effective?

Research suggests protein makes a person feel satisfied longer than carbohydrate-rich meals / drinks and therefore less likely to crave high-calorie fatty foods. Understanding this, PhD designed Diet Whey to deliver the best protein in a slow-release formula that can replace meals and help burn body fat.

Does science support a raw food diet? What about vegetarianism, is it a healthy way of life? What about omega-3s and B vitamins? Do flavinoids, phytochemicals, antioxidants, and lycopenes in fruits and veggies help us win the battle against obesity, heart disease and cancer? Do we need to detoxify the colon with something other than food?

Can a Raw Food Cleanse Cure Diseases?

To decide if raw food will help your body fight disease it’s important to realize that there are two kinds of health issues. You can’t alter genetic factors that predispose you toward diseases, reverse aging, erase gender or alter medical history. It’s possible to use diet to minimize the chances that genetic inclinations will turn into diseases prematurely.

Science has studied fruits / vegetables and proven many contain high levels of antioxidants / phytochemicals. Eating fresh foods high in antioxidants may reduce free radicals and diminish the likelihood of cancer or heart disease, however, recent studies indicate that it may have to do with flavinoids or other phytochemicals. Studies suggest that while a raw food cleanse isn’t medicinal, some fruits and vegetables provide more than nutrition and may stimulate disease fighting responses, although exactly which phytochemicals, antioxidants or other elements are responsible, is unknown.

While only some foods have been studied (and some may be considered exceptionally high in cancer reducing properties), there’s clear evidence to support recommending a vegetarian diet. A raw food cleanse may be a start toward lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing heart disease and colon cancer and stimulating weight loss.

Have the Benefits of Vegetarianism Been Proven?

Flavinoids can be found in raw blueberries, blackberries, black currents and strawberries. The body can absorb the antioxidant properties, so blending strawberries with blue-black fruits/berries into a smoothie may be one way to reduce free radicals.

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage contain folic acid, beta-carotene and vitamin C. They also have glucosinolates – a sulfur / nitrogen compound from glucose and an amino acid – that stimulates cancer-fighting enzymes. While not a cure, veggies in the Brassica family have been proven to help protect the body. If vegetable consumption lowers the risk of colon cancer, what happens to the glucosinolates and isothiocyanates when veggies are cooked?

Professor Paul Thornalley from Warwick University has conducted various studies on Broccoli and other Brassica veggies, explains that boiling them destroys over 70% of their value and stir-frying, steaming and microwaving leads to a 15 – 20% decrease in glucosinolates. Apparently, the less they’re cooked the better!

A Raw Food Cleanse or a Partly Raw Way of Life

A raw food cleanse may have positive benefits, but the word “cleanse” is misleading. Science doesn’t support detoxification based on the erroneous idea that toxins build-up in the colon and can’t be eliminated normally. A raw food cleanse should more correctly be a way of eating fresh fruits and vegetables to increase fiber intake, and maximize disease prevention properties daily. It’s recommended to eat raw vegetables and fruits as a lifestyle, not a temporary cleanse. The benefits of vegetarianism can be maximized by including carrots for beta-carotene, spinach for vitamin C, and peas for folic acid / fiber that the colon requires for elimination.

The Benefits of Vegetarianism that Doesn’t Exclude Fish

Science supports vegetarian diets, but the benefits of vegetarianism could be lots if primarily carbohydrate, low-protein, meat/cheese substitutes, wheat gluten, and processed ingredients. Programs for healthy vegetarian weight loss will include five fresh vegetables/fruits a day, soy, tofu/tempeh, beans, legumes, and….FISH. Tuna, salmon and other fish/seafood dishes should be included to get essential omega-3s and B vitamins. Low-cal vegetarian weight loss programs with carbohydrates have been clinically tested to be less effective than those high in protein. Why? Protein satisfies for longer – therefore less hunger. Tofu, fish, beans, legumes, varied vegetables, and blended soups, will satisfy the tummy plus deliver essential amino acids, omega-3s, vitamins, minerals, flavinoids, phytochemicals and fiber.

Green Tea Supplements

Green tea supplements for fat loss and cancer prevention? Okay, but drinking the tea as a beverage is just as beneficial, perhaps more so if replacing black tea / coffee. The US National Library of Medicine says that green tea may help prevent (not cure) pancreatic / ovarian, cancers, minimize the risk of developing cervical dysplasia and lower blood pressure / cholesterol. Instead of taking a green tea supplements in capsules, it’s recommended to drink 2 – 4 cups of tea a day, along with a vegetarian lifestyle. Don’t depend on extracts promising to burn fat. Green tea may help with weight loss due to containing Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) a type of flavinoid, but it’s not a magic fat burner. The scientifically proven way to burn fat is to reduce the required 2000 / 2500 calories to about 1500/ 1800, and do so with high-fiber, high protein, satisfying foods.

Cleansing with Renu Herbs

Renu Herbs has become famous for colon cleansing and detoxification. But, are cleansing herbs essential? Scientific research suggests that the colon eliminates waste when given water and a low-fat, low-sugar, low-carb, fiber-rich diet. People who suffer from constipation need three things: water, fiber and exercise. Meat and carbohydrate-rich diets provide less than half the fiber required for proper elimination, therefore increasing fiber though vegetables, psyllium husk, bran, split peas, lentils, lima beans, green peas and drinking lots of water, will give the colon what it needs.

Are Renu Herb Colon Cleanse products Harmful?

For short-term use, the Renu Herbs Colon Cleanse is considered safe and contains: cascara sagrada (a laxative), senna (diuretic/laxative), psyllium (fiber), turkey rhubarb (diarrheic/laxative), Aloe, barberry root (for bile production) and slippery elm (a mucus secretion stimulant). While Renu Herbs cleanses may help constipation due to poor diet, healthy bowel function should be maintained with everyday foods. Use Renu Herbs only to jump-start the bowels; best in conjunction with a raw food cleanse or to maximize a vegetarian weight loss program, or at the start of a lifestyle change that will lead to vegetarianism , which will eventually help the colon cleanse itself.

Hormone-free menopause supplements contain one or more of the these basic ingredients that claim to reduce hot flashes, control night sweats, decrease the risk of osteoporosis, stimulate natural estrogen and/or progesterone production, diminish mood swings, help insomnia and increase libido:

1. Black Cohosh

The main ingredient in menopause supplements is Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa), found in North America, once used by native peoples to treat depression and later by European settlers to stimulate female lactation. In modern menopause supplements, black cohosh is added to help with hot flashes due to its alleged estrogenic properties. Scientific data suggests that prohormone supplements technically should provide the body with building blocks to produce hormones, however that is not the case with black cohosh. Instead of containing bioactive estrogen-like chemicals, it appears to have alpha-Methylserotonin which could (theoretically) stimulate the brain’s serotonin receptors.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for triggering a feeling of well-being, often called the happiness drug, and therefore has the potential to make a woman “feel” better despite no increase in female hormones. However ?-Methylserotonin can’t easily cross from the blood to the central nervous system / brain. Although it’s related to ?-Methyltryptophan (capable of correcting serotonin deficiencies), alpha-Methylserotonin has weak mental affects because it simply can’t get to the brain. That’s why Black Cohosh may fail to provide menopausal symptom relief. Nevertheless, it’s considered safe to try. (Just not recommended for those with liver disorders.)

- Remifemin Enzymatic Therapy (contains black cohosh)

2. Calcium, Soy, Vitamin D and Flaxseed

Menopause supplements usually contain vitamins, minerals and calcium to reduce bone deterioration and decrease the risk of osteoporosis. Calcium supplementation has become controversial after studies suggested a relation between calcium and myocardial infractions. While some women are prone to cardiovascular problems / arterial plaque build-up, others aren’t. Testing is recommended prior to taking a menopause supplement containing calcium. For calcium to be absorbed, even from soy sources, vitamin D is essential. A good vitamin D menopause supplement is especially important for women who may not get 15 minutes of daily sunshine.

Soy extracts have been proven to be effective as a means to safely strengthen bones as well as reduce hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Although still being investigated, there’s mounting evidence that eating soy products (and taking soy supplements) can be help women deal with menopausal issues without HRT.

Flaxseed is in some formulas and can provide a bit of relief for women who have mild cases of night sweats and hot flashes.

- Menopause Treatment by Fem-Flax (a flaxseed and herbal blend)

3. Wild Yam Prohormone Supplements / Bioidentical Hormone Products

For information on natural bioidentical hormone products, go to: Acne Home Treatment versus Pharmaceuticals Part IV, which explores home hormone testing kits and wild yam prohormone creams that claim to naturally replace pharmaceutical HRT.

Plant derived prohormone supplements and bioidentical hormone creams made from wild yam, do indeed contain estrogen/progesterone-like compounds, but unfortunately clinical studies suggest that the human body can’t absorb them, or at least not easily and therefore may take a very long time to help.

- Mexican Wild Yam capsules by Vitamin Shoppe

- Wild Yam Cream by Good n Natural

4. St. John’s Wort, Ginseng and Don Quai

St. John’s Wort is an ingredient in herbal menopause formulas. Although clinical tests are inconclusive, there’s some evidence to suggest it may help reduce depression, balance mood swings and mildly decrease the intensity of dreaded hot flashes.

Ginseng is present in menopausal preparations, and claims similar abilities to those of St. John’s Wort, however it’s less effective. While Ginseng may have stimulating qualities to increase alertness, it doesn’t appear to be effective as a menopause symptom reliever unless blended with other ingredients.

Dong Quai is in herbal formulas, but evidence doesn’t support its presence in prohormone supplements. It may mildly reduce hot flashes but there are more effective treatments. Choose something like “Hot Flash Tablets” by Source Naturals, which contains don quai and phytoestrogen ingredients, too.

To learn more about don quai, go to: Acne Care Treatment Part VI, which explores Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preparations containing dong quai and looks at clinical tests conducted to determine if it has estrogen blocking or estrogen producing effects, or neither.

- St. John’s Wort by Nature’s Way

- Ginseng for Women Imperial Elixir by Imperial

5. DHEA – dehydroepiandrosterone

DHEA is a prohromone supplement widely used to stimulate hormone production because it acts as precursor for both testosterone and estrogen. It’s marketed to women as a means to balance estrogen, increase libido and reduce general signs of aging. While there’s little evidence to support these claims, it’s found in many menopause products. Caution should be exercised when choosing prohormone supplements containing DHEA. Consult a physician beforehand.

A Look at Anti Inflammatory Joint Pain Supplements and MSM

Osteoarthritis / osteoarthroses, which causes chronic pain due to cartilage breakdown, may require several treatments in order to effectively be brought under control. Here are some recommended methods, including both pharmaceutical products and OTC joint supplements.

1. Acetaminophen (even aspirin) can offer temporary relief of joint pain. It may momentarily ease discomfort, but isn’t a means to repair the underlying problem.

Product example: Precise Pain Relieving Cream by Tylenol

2. Anti inflammatory supplements / pharmaceutical drugs can reduce swelling and inflamed joints. Pharmaceutical products like oral NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) have been the primary treatment along with a cycloxygenase COX-2 inhibitor. NSAIDs plus cayenne pepper creams may also be applied. One of the prescription formulas is a topical gel with diclofenac. Diclofenac (not available in all regions) can offer relief. It’s a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory / analgesic and contians phenylacetic acid.

Product Example: Voltarol gel contians diclofenac and if ordered online will ship from the UK. Buy 100 g tube of Voltarol.

OTC topical joint pain products to try:

1. ActivOn Topical Analgesic – extra strength joint and muscle pain relief by ActivOn

2. Capzasin Arthritis Pain Relief Gel with sponge applicator / 1.5 ounce / by Capzasin

OTC / prescription analgesic / anti-inflammatory products don’t cure the underlying issues associated with articular disease, and the side effects (of oral supplements for pain and inflammation) can include gastrointestinal problems, and when balanced by cycloxygenase inhibitors (to alleviate side-effects), COX -2 inhibitors may damage kidneys and the cardiovascular system.

Since both NSAID drugs and their accompanying COX-2 inhibitors are symptomatic treatments, not cures, many individuals seek relief elsewhere. That’s lead researchers to investigate the use of chondroprotective drugs. These are not quick-fix solutions to pain, but an attempt to treat underlying issues of osteoarthritis by stimulating connective tissue repair.

Do chondroprotective drugs work?

In theory, certain chondroprotective preparations (designed to inhibit the deterioration of the articular cartilage, and stimulate chondrocyte metabolism in OA patients), like glucosamine / chondritin sulphate / diacetylrhein / diacerein, should provide longer-term relief and perhaps even retard the structural breakdown of cartilage – repairing (not just masking) the problem.

Initial clinical trials using diacerein showed evidence of being more effective than placebos, however it’s not available in all countries. In the United States there are chondroprotective joint pain / anti inflammatory supplements that contain glucosamine and chondroitin (in oral OTC preparations).

Product Examples:

1. Kirkland Extra Strength Tablets Glucosamine HCI plus MSM

Do oral joint supplements work?

Studies using glucosamine and chondroitin joint supplements offer inconclusive results. Yet many frustrated individuals who haven’t found relief from deliberating joint pain have reported benefits of using oral joint supplements.

Since a CURE for osteoarthritis isn’t available, there’s little reason not to try the available joint pain supplements to find out if they may have a positive result in your individual case.

Which are the best joint supplement product to try?

Is methylsulfonylmethane (known as DMSO2 or methyl sulfone as well as dimethyl sulfone or dimethyl sulfoxide) a possible solution to inflammation / joint pain?

Methylsulfonylmethane (an MSM supplement) is a sulfur derived from vegetable / animal sources and, in theory, could help repair connective tissue. A healthy body uses amino acids and sulfur to build connective tissue for bones, ligaments, cartilage, joints, etc, but clinical studies conducted on oral MSM supplement formulas haven’t offered conclusive proof that the powders, capsules, tablets or liquid preparations can be absorbed. Despite controversy, many people find that taking an oral MSM supplement or using a topical methylsulfonylmethane solution, alleviates pain, reduces inflammation and aids to restore mobility. Even if MSM doesn’t repair connective tissue, it appears to act as an analgesic, and when there’s less pain, movement is easier.

Product Example: MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) 60 / 120 or 240 tablets – each contains 750mg / by Source Naturals

While sulfur requirements should be obtained through a healthy diet with various protein sources, individuals who may be deficient can supplement their diet with up to 3,000 mg.

One of the best joint supplement formulas sold over the counter is the blended version with MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin, B vitamins and extracts of shark cartilage. Try one of these anti inflammatory supplements by Dr. Miller’s Joint Repair.

Another one of the best joint supplement products that people use to control pain, in order to remain active despite osteoarthritis, is Joint Relief Complex II by Healthy Choice Naturals.

Herbal remedies are often sold without the benefit of clinical evaluations, but some of the latest dopamine supplements are different. They’ve been tested and are now used to treat conditions like Parkinson’s and Segawa’s disease also known as DRD or Dopamine-responsive dystonia.

A Legume That’s Better Than Traditional Herbs for Depression

If dopamine supplements can treat serious conditions, they can also help people with depression and anxiety. The treatment for individuals with dopamine deficiencies is levodopa or L-Dopa, found in Mucuna pruriens, not a herb but a legume commonly called velvet bean. Levodopa is also synthesized from the amino acid – L-tyrosine and made into effective prescription formulations.

Why Choose Mucuna pruriens Dopamine Supplements

L-Dopa (from Mucuna pruriens beans) is the precursor to three neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. It’s important that it be a “precursor” and not the actual neurotransmitter because ready-made dopamine can’t reach the central nervous system due to something called the blood-brain barrier. Yet L-Dopa passes through that barrier and stimulates neurotransmitter production.

Mucuna pruriens is sold several dopamine supplements and blends with other herbs for depression especially designed for mood swings, anxiety, and depressive emotional states that previously were only treated with prescription medications.

A Wellness Formula for Seasonal Depression

Some people find that their moods are altered by cold, lack of sun and decreased physical activity in winter. Previously, natural treatments available were a kind of wellness formula, containing things like vitamin C and Echinacea, helpful but not powerful antidepressants.

Now, the latest naturopathic remedies and wellness formula preparations, designed with Mucuna pruriens, aid to restore libido, boost alertness and combat seasonal depression.

Amoryn is a wellness formula that combines several herbs for depression and traditional naturopathic remedies as well as a dopamine supplements to offer what some consider the ultimate blend. The active ingredients are: standardized 3% hyperforin, 5-hydroxytryptophan extracted from Griffonia simplicifolia, and standardized 4% rosavins / 1% salidrosides from Rhodiola Rosea, along with folic acid, vitamins B6 / B12, selenium, vitamin D3, Zinc and vitamin C.

Naturopathic Remedies for Depression

Choosing herbs for depression has been a guessing game that most people couldn’t afford to play because deficiencies in serotonin / dopamine requires immediate attention. The most common naturopathic remedies have included St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), requiring several weeks to take effect, and although helpful, not always consistent. One reason for inconsistencies has been because the phytochemical hyperforin (its active ingredient) is unstable and loses potency when subjected to oxygen or light. It has also been difficult to determine how much hyperforin is in a drop of herbal extract, which is why naturopathic remedies in general are difficult to evaluate. Now, individuals wishing to try a herbal formula for depression containing hyperforin, can buy stabilized St. John’s Wort to administer more precise dosages.

Beyond Naturopathic Remedies and Herbs for Depression: Natural Amino Acids

L-Dopa, levodopa, or dopamine supplements made from velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens), are considered the most effective OTC treatments for depression. A close runner up in the best dopamine supplementation category is S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe), which may be effective as a treatment for depression when combined with folic acid and vitamins B6 / B12. SAM-e isn’t a herb, but a substance derived from L-methionine (an amino acid). Studies indicate that SAMe acts quickly and is generally safe. The dosage is important therefore, although available over-the-counter, should only be taken under medical supervision.

5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP is another natural remedy thought to increase serotonin. 5-HTP is an amino acid found in foods like leafy greens, veggies such as pumpkin and lean turkey, but in low concentrations. Dietary supplements offer a means to get higher and more controlled dosages. 5-HTP is derived from the black seedpods of an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia, used to treat depression and sleep disorders, but as with many naturopathic remedies, there’s limited evidence as to its effectiveness.

Get Immediate Medical Attention for Chronic Depression

Individuals with moderate depression may find relief using wellness formulas like Amoryn, stabilized St. John’s Wort, Mucuna pruriens, SAMe, 5-HTP, B vitamins or herbal blends, but anyone with severe / chromic depression MUST get immediate medical attention with supervised medication (naturopathic and/or pharmaceutical).

Do Memory Supplements Improve Concentration, Alleviate Dementia or Offer Hope in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s?

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acid Fish Oil Brain Supplements

Omega-3 essential fatty acids or PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids / EPA: Eicosapentaenoic acid, DHA: docosahexaenoic acid, and LNA linolenic acid or ALA: ?-Linolenic acid) are derived from halibut, sardines, tuna, mackerel, trout, salmon, herring, seafood, krill, algae, walnuts, macadamia, pecans, soybeans, flax, and pumpkin.

People deficient in omega-3s may have impaired cognitive functions, poor memory and lack of concentration and most diets lack omega-3s. Food sources are the best means to obtain essential fatty acids to improve brain functions. Independent clinical trials of omage-3 essential fatty acid supplements to improve short-term memory in healthy subjects have proven inconclusive however individuals are encouraged to boost omega-3s, not just for their brain, but for overall well-being. Dosage shouldn’t exceed 3 or 4 g/day. Consult a physician before taking omega-3 supplements. (There’s no evidence that fish oil is an effective treatment for depression, bi-polar disorders, schizophrenia, or ADHD.)

2. Huperzine A Memory Supplement

Huperzine A is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor derived from Huperzia serrata or firmoss) which contains an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor thought to increase acetylcholine (Ach) – a neurotransmitter involved in cognitive functions. Since Alzheimer’s has been associated with a deficiency in acetylcholine, researchers believe it’s possible to use cholinesterase inhibitors like tacrine (Cognex) or the Huperzine in lycophyte plants (like fir clubmosses / firmosses) to help. Clinical evaluations in Alzheimer’s patients show small positive results (requires further study). Test results are inconclusive on whether Huperzine A improves memory in young healthy adults.

3. Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) Memory Supplements

ALCAR is an acetylated complex of the amino acids methionine and lysine, responsible for transporting fatty acids, and may help prevent the deterioration of brain cells. Studies are ongoing but not yet able to provide proof of specific benefits in healthy individuals. Why? Because, while ALCAR offers neuroprotective benefits, it’s unclear if the body absorbs L-carnitine when taken as a supplement. Best results occur in athletes who blend ALA and ALCAR for improved concentration while training (and muscle recovery).

4. Vitamin E Supplements for Memory (?-Tocopherol)

Vitamin E combats oxidation in cell membranes and may have positive effects on memory, even as a treatment for Alzheimer’s. However, it shouldn’t be taken without medical supervision because as an antioxidant with neuroprotective properties it must be administered in relatively high dosages that can be dangerous for older people. High dosages should only be considered on medical advice.

5. Ginseng Brain Supplements

Panax ginseng, supplements (Asian ginseng), contains ginsenosides with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties known to boost alertness. Despite its use as a supplement for cognitive disorders, there exists no conclusive evidence that it’s consistently beneficial. Small studies indicate that participants who take ginseng become more alert. It’s generally well tolerated and therefore safe to try. (Don’t take with antidepressants).

6. Ginkgo Biloba Memory Supplement

Ginkgo contains flavonoids, glycosides and terpenoids thought to help dementia and cognitive functions in seniors. It’s not considered an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s. Conclusive evidence is lacking to support Ginkgo as a brain stimulant in healthy individuals. Some tests indicate that ginkgo acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor and increases neurotransmitter activity (ergo alertness), while others suggest placebos do the same. Side effects include restlessness, heart palpitations, headaches and nausea. (Ginkgo should NOT be taken with anticoagulants or antidepressants.)

7. Bacopa Memory Supplements

Bacopa monnieri, Brahmi, is an Indian Ayurvedic medicine derived from an aquatic plant erroneously called water hyssop. It’s sold as a memory enhancing supplement despite no conclusive scientific proof of it being effective.

8. DHEA Supplements for Memory

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone produced by the brain. Taking DHEA brain supplements may have positive effects on mood swings and depression, but there’s no evidence that it enhances short-term memory, combats Alzheimer’s or counteracts aging. Only take under medical supervision.

9. Coenzyme Q10 Brain Supplements

Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant best taken with food or in an oil preparation. The potential health benefits of Coenzyme Q10 range from headache relief to Parkinson’s and cardiovascular disease treatments. Its cognitive enhancement effects are still unproven, but it has few side effects therefore worth a try. It may interact with other medications so consult a physician. If a supplement is contraindicated, good sources of Coenzyme Q10 are liver, tuna and salmon.

10. Phosphatidylserine (PS) Memory Supplement

Phosphatidylserine extracted from the bovine brains was used to create a memory supplement that appeared to aid cognitive functions. However, the animal chemicals were prone to contamination, therefore it’s now made from soybeans. Clinical trials suggest that soy phosphatidylserine isn’t effective as a treatment for Alzheimer’s and only slightly beneficial for enhancing memory.
