Clinical Studies Explore Supplements Part VI:
Have you recently read about Leptin protein supplements or heard what Jeffery Friedman says about the role of genetics in weight loss? Curious about what Byron J. Richards and Wellness Resources have to do with Leptin?
In this post we take a look at what award winning Jeffery Friedman discovered regarding leptin and explore suggestions from Byron J. Richards regarding leptin as the best protein supplement weight management program. But first, here’s what JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association) has to say about leptin.
Clinical Evidence that Leptin may be one of the best supplements for weight loss?
In March of 2000, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study about “Recombinant leptin for weight loss in obese and lean adults: a randomized, controlled, dose-escalation trial,” (by Heymsfield SB, Greenberg AS, Fujioka K, Dixon RM, Kushner R, Hunt T, Lubina JA, Patane J, Self B, Hunt P, McCamish M.) from the Weight Control Unit, St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, that (based on preliminary observations) concluded that a “relationship with weight and fat loss was observed with subcutaneous recombinant leptin injections in both lean and obese subjects.”
In the above test, leptin was administered via injections, and the results that showed that “leptin appears to induce weight loss in some obese subjects,” but what about the possibility that oral leptin protein supplements may work? This continues to be examined as per the recommendation of the above group in their conclusions: “Additional research into the potential role for leptin and related hormones in the treatment of human obesity is warranted.” And that is exactly what has happened. Numerous studies are evaluating the best protein for weight loss based on this relationship between leptin and obesity.

Recent Studies that Affect How to Choose the Best Protein Supplement
In March 2011, the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine published “Leptin and Beyond: An Odyssey to the Central Control of Body Weight.” (For the complete article please go to the post by Min-Dian Li from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Combined Programs in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Section of Comparative Medicine, Integrative Cell Signaling, and Neurobiology of Metabolism (ICSNM), Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3064240/ )
In brief: Douglas Coleman and Jeffery Friedman have received the Lasker Award (2010) for research that lead to the discovery of a “fat cell-produced hormone, leptin…”. The studies pertaining to how leptin genetically affects obesity are complex and delve into the “broad implications for the genetic control of body weight”.
Dr. Jeff Friedman explains that his research and theories are based on the premise that human processes are biologically determined. See what he says in the following video from Big Think titled “Jeffrey Friedman on Why We Eat Too Much”
Jeffrey Friedman discusses his research on leptin and obesity:
The Hormone Responsible for Satisfaction
Before being able to choose the best supplements you’ll need to understand more about leptin.
For those of us who need a simple explanation on what leptin is and how it works, let’s just say that it’s a hormone that’s produced by fat cells called “adipocytes”. It has to do with regulating how fat is stored, glycemic control and metabolism. The unique element of leptin is that it also regulates appetite and has to do with how “full” or “satisfied” we feel after eating.
More studies are required to prove how leptin in specific oral protein supplements or dietary / weight loss formulas may have a positive effect on weight management, nevertheless, products such as LeptiFit (with proprietary ingredients such as LeptiCore) are on the market and claim to “trigger the sensation of satiety”, giving the feeling of having eaten enough – therefore helping to curb overeating that may lead to or contribute to obesity. LeptiCore (as an ingredient) may be found in various weight management products such as protein supplement drinks, shakes, capsules, and liquid formulas. The recommended daily dosage is 300 mg, twice daily, prior to meals – not as meal replacements. (Example: Lepti-Trim – Daytime Capsules by Total Body Research Labs and Solo Slim)
Amongst the products that contain the patent pending LeptiCore formula, are the Solo Slim supplements, which have offered some help to those wishing to lose weight – although the effectiveness of these products requires further long-term studies.

Is Leptin a Miracle Cure for Obesity?
While there are many companies that manufacture high profile supplement brands, often touted as the best protein supplement formulas simply because they get a lot of publicity, choosing the best protein products that actually work should be based on what clinical studies have proven – unfortunately, there are contradictory studies when it comes to leptin. Due to the fact that leptin is a hormone and not merely a protein, it affects the appetite, the metabolism and even the immune system as well as other neurological and endocrine functionality. The balance of leptin is essential because both a deficiency as well as an excess can cause severe problems. Although studies into the potential benefits of leptin show diverse results, and in some cases have proven unhelpful (even harmful to the cardiovascular system causing hypertension), others offer positive results. It’s apparent that much more research is required to determine whether or not leptin may cause long-term side affects or if it’s a safe and effective means to combat obesity in some individuals.
As scientists continue to explore the best protein formulas that may help to regulate metabolism and hormonal functions, we do well to eat healthy whole foods and only choose (even the best protein supplement products) after considering all the evidence and consulting physicians and/or dietary experts who can offer personal advice. Our bodies function on biological / genetic principles that as “humans” we all share. However each of us is unique ins some very important aspects, and how we respond to treatments, medications, types of foods and especially supplements, varies from person to person.
